چکیده

Because of low occurrence concentrations, small sample volumes, and low and variable recoveries associated with analytical methods, most measurements of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in water samples collected under the Information Collection Rule (ICR) were negative; many locations produced nothing but zero results over the duration of ICR monitoring. The greater median volumes analyzed and the higher recoveries achieved with the method used in the Supplemental Surveys (Method 1622) yielded fewer zeros, but some locations still showed no positive counts. Bayesian statistical techniques were used to estimate national Cryptosporidium and Giardia occurrence distributions that were consistent with measured results. The statistical model accounted for the volumes analyzed and the low but variable recoveries. Median estimates were produced for the national distribution of mean concentrations of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in water treatment plant influent. Uncertainties in these estimates were represented by 90% credible bands. These same techniques were used with data sets from the Supplemental Surveys to estimate occurrence in large and medium-sized systems. Distributions of Cryptosporidium occurrence derived from the two Supplemental Surveys and the ICR had medians near 0.02 oocysts/L, but the ICR survey yielded a greater location-to-location variance and predicted the greatest number of water sources with very high (more than 1 oocyst/L) and very low (less than 0.001 oocyst/L) occurrence.

Assessment of methods for detection of infectious Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in reclaimed effluents.

This study evaluates the occurrence of Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in reclaimed effluents if method 1623 with the Envirochek capsule filters (standard and high-volume [HV] filters) and a modified version of the Information Collection Rule method (ICR) with the polypropylene yarn-wound cartridge filter are used. The recovery efficiency of the analytical methods was evaluated with s...

Cryptosporidium and Giardia: Waterborne Parasites

ryptosporidium and Giardia are single-celled, microscopic organisms and are disease-causing parasites that may infect people through contaminated drinking water and recreational waters. Symptoms resulting from infection include mild to severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, weight loss, bloating, and vomiting. Chlorine, a commonly used disinfectant in water supplies, can eliminate Giardia from wate...

Identifying host sources, human health risk and indicators of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in a Canadian watershed influenced by urban and rural activities.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia were characterized in a watershed in southern Ontario, Canada, over a 2½ year period. River samples were collected every two weeks, primarily near a municipal drinking water treatment plant intake. Cryptosporidium and Giardia were frequently detected with an overall occurrence rate of 88 and 97%, respectively. Giardia concentrations were higher than Cryptosporidium, ...

First investigations into the prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia spp. in Hungarian drinking water.

Safe drinking water is a top priority in preventing disease outbreaks and is of general concern to everyone. This study examines the occurrence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Hungarian drinking water supplies for the first time. A total of 76 raw and drinking water samples were examined using the U.S. EPA Method 1623. From these 15 of 34 (48.4%) raw water samples tested positive for Giardia ...

Detection of Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts/oocysts in watersheds and drinking water sources in Brazil urban areas.

The protozoan parasites Giardia and Cryptosporidium have been described as important waterborne disease pathogens, and are associated with severe gastrointestinal illnesses. The objective of this paper was to investigate the presence of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in samples from watershed catchments and treated water sources. A total of 25 water samples were collected and examine...
